Every domain registration is required to record contact details for the owner. By default those details — often a real name, address, email, and phone number — are published in the public WHOIS directory, where anyone, including bots, can read them. WHOIS privacy replaces them with the details of a privacy proxy.
What gets exposed without it
A public WHOIS record is a gift to spammers, scammers, and anyone doing reconnaissance on you. It is routinely scraped for marketing lists, mined for phishing that references your real registration date, and used in social-engineering attempts against your registrar account.
- Your name and postal address, visible to anyone.
- A contact email that quickly attracts spam and phishing.
- A phone number harvested for cold calls and scams.
How WHOIS privacy works
With privacy enabled, the public record shows the proxy service in place of your personal information. Legitimate messages sent to the proxy address can still be forwarded to you, and your real details remain on file with the registrar for legal and administrative purposes — they are simply no longer published to the world.
Included free at Airfree Clouds
Some registrars charge an annual fee for privacy or make it hard to find. At Airfree Clouds, WHOIS privacy is on by default and included at no extra cost for every eligible domain. A handful of TLDs — mostly country codes with registry rules — do not permit it, and we flag those clearly at checkout.
